Saved Commodities

If you ship the same commodities regularly, your Saved Commodities in FreightSimple lets you store them once and reuse them on every future quote. This saves time and prevents the small typos that lead to reclassification charges at the terminal.

  1. Saving a commodity. How to capture a commodity from an existing quote and name it for easy reuse.
  2. Auto-filling new quotes. Pulling a saved commodity into a new quote in two clicks.
  3. Bulk-editing. Updating dimensions or packaging across saved entries at once.

What a saved commodity contains

Each saved commodity stores the details you'd otherwise re-enter on every quote:

  • Commodity description
  • NMFC class and item number
  • Dimensions (length, width, height)
  • Weight per piece and total weight
  • Packaging type (pallets, crates, drums, etc.)
  • Hazmat information, if applicable
  • A friendly name for fast searching (e.g. "aluminum pallets · standard")

How to create and use a saved commodity

  1. Open Saved Commodities

From the top menu, open Manage Company → Saved Commodities.

The Manage Company menu open in the FreightSimple Dashboard, showing the Saved Commodities option highlighted.
  2. Click Add New Saved Commodity

On the Saved Commodities screen, click Add New Saved Commodity to open the form.

  3. Fill in the freight details

Enter the details for your freight: description, NMFC class, dimensions, weight, packaging, and any hazmat information. Give it a friendly name (for example, "aluminum pallets, standard") so it's easy to find later, then save.

The Add New Saved Commodity form, with fields for description, NMFC class, dimensions, weight, and packaging visible.
  4. Manage your saved entries

Once saved, you can edit or delete entries from the same screen at any time. Changes apply to future quotes only. Past quotes are not affected.

  5. Use a saved commodity on a new quote

When you start a new quote, your saved commodities appear as a dropdown. Pick one to auto-fill every field, or enter new details if you're shipping something different. You can still edit any field before submitting if a specific shipment needs an adjustment.

Common questions

Can my team see and use the commodities I save?

Yes. Saved commodities are shared across your entire FreightSimple account. Anyone on your team booking a shipment will see the same dropdown of saved entries.

Should I save commodities with NMFC codes or hazmat information?

Yes, especially these. Saving complex details like NMFC classes and dangerous goods information removes the risk of typos on the values that most often trigger reclassification charges at the terminal.

What's the difference between editing a saved commodity and editing the fields on a quote?

Editing a saved commodity updates the entry itself and changes how it auto-fills on every future quote. Editing the fields on a quote after pulling in a saved commodity only changes that one shipment. The saved entry stays the same.

Can I delete a commodity I no longer ship?

Yes. Open Manage Company → Saved Commodities, find the entry, and delete it. This removes it from the dropdown on new quotes but does not affect any past quotes or bookings where it was used.
