NMFC Codes and Freight Class
Freight Class
Typically when quoting LTL freight with a carrier or a broker, you're asked for a freight class for your shipment. Freight class can be very confusing, so FreightSimple has solved this headache for you.
If you've shipped LTL before, you probably have a Freight Class Calculator bookmarked in your browser. Freight class is tricky to figure out, and often the source of rebills (where your bill at the end is higher than you were expecting because you got the freight class wrong).
FreightSimple is designed to take care of freight class for you. Because we take care of it for you, we promise we will never send you an additional bill because the freight class is wrong. FreightSimple automatically calculates your freight class based on your entered dimensions, weight, and commodity. If you know your freight class to be different than what is displayed, let us know via live chat or emailing support@freightsimple.com and we will help you.
NMFC Codes
NMFC is a classification system for freight in the United States. Every commodity type has an NMFC code that helps carriers know how much to bill for transporting that commodity.
FreightSimple doesn't require that you include an NMFC code when getting quotes, however if you do include an NMFC Code, FreightSimple will be able to provide you with better quotes.
The FreightSimple team will help you figure out the NMFC code for a particular commodity and save it to your dashboard for future use. Typically, it's only a 5 minute conversation to figure this out, so don't hesitate to open a live chat or email support@freightsimple.com!
