Interlining

Each carrier wants to provide as wide an area of coverage as they can. A wide area of coverage means they can get your freight to and from more places themselves.

If a carrier doesn't have their own terminal in either the pickup location or the delivery location, then they might make an agreement with a partner carrier to service that area. The two carriers then work together to deliver this freight.

This process is called interlining. It's very common especially when moving freight across the country and continent, and most carriers do this so that they can share resources to provide the best service possible. You might even find that more than two carriers become involved in some moves.

Interlining can provide very competitive rates, as carriers have strong partnerships and are able to fill each other's excess capacity. However, whenever freight switches between carriers, there is an added chance for a mistake or confusion to happen which might cause a delay in shipment. Often carriers will use two different PRO (tracking) numbers, and FreightSimple will communicate with all carriers involved in your shipment to ensure it's moving smooth.
