LTL vs Small Parcel

Knowing when to choose LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipping over parcel shipping can be confusing, but understanding the difference can save you time and money in your business.

The main difference between parcel and LTL shipping is size. Parcels are typically smaller in size, meaning they can be lifted without help (often by hand), are easier to transport, and can be shipped in higher volumes. Generally, parcel shipping is a cost-effective option for shippers with freight weighing 60lbs or less. Parcel shipping is an economical choice if you’re sending a few smaller, lightweight packages. Additionally, parcels can be dropped off at a carrier drop off location, rather than scheduling a pickup.

LTL pieces are larger, usually palletized, and less likely to incur damage. LTL shipping is also better for heavier, bulkier, and uniquely-shaped freight. LTL shipments often require a forklift or some other means of lifting and moving, and cannot be moved by hand. These shipments are stored in non-damaging spaces, making them a less-risky option for shippers and carriers. There are a few less checkpoints along their journey, meaning less hands on the freight, which can minimize the risk of damage. Shippers with more freight than parcel carriers can accommodate will use LTL if they don’t have enough to fill an entire truckload. Also, LTL is a smart option if you want all of your freight to deliver to the same location, saving you more on shipment per package. Sometimes, parcel shippers sending multiple units to the same location may choose to consolidate their units onto a pallet, and ship it LTL.

Freight loads wider than 8’6” or taller than 13’6” are considered oversized and will require special equipment to move- for these you can consider flatbed trailers or other options. (FreightSimple does not yet offer flatbed services.)

FreightSimple allows for shipments with a minimum weight of 60lbs. Maximum weights vary depending on carrier, so if you have any questions, open a live chat and we'll be happy to help!
