LTL vs Full Truckload

We know all about the differences between Parcel and LTL shipping from our last article. But what about the difference between LTL and a full truckload (FTL)?

A few factors contribute to the difference between Less Than Truckload (LTL) shipping and Full Truckload (FTL) shipping, including dimensions, weight, and time sensitivity. The easiest way to tell the two apart is in the name itself.

LTL (less than truckload) freight does not require the full space of the trailer, whereas full truckload (FTL) requires most or all of the trailer, or maximizes the trailer’s weight capacity.

Generally, shipments of 10 pallets and 15,000lbs total and under qualify as LTL. This is a great option for companies that do not require the entire trailer space, and therefore only pay for the space they use on that move.

If your pallets total more than ten pieces and weight collectively more than 15,000 lbs, Full Truckload (FTL) may be a better fit. If your dimensions are exceptionally long, you may also prefer to use a full truckload. A full truckload will travel from pickup to destination uninterrupted.
